Which types of advertising are most effective?

I was wondering, in your opinion, which types of advertising would be most effective for a small time contractor/sub-contractor? I'd consider anything from handing out business cards door to door or an ad in the thrifty nickel to billboards and radio/tv commercials. Or is advertising ineffective and the best strategy for construction to focus on developing personal connections with the customers?

My basic plan is to focus mainly on electrical and tape. For electrical my idea is to provide dirt cheap but quality work. A lot of people are stuck using unlicensed ones because that's all they can afford, but I'd do professional safe up to code installations at the same price. And my former boss in electric could get a permit for me for a fee if need be. He's worked in electrical over 30 years, mainly for big companies doing industrial work until he started working for himself. Because of him I know about a few things that the competition doesn't.

The tape trade has the advantages of no licensing, and it's much easier to make accurate estimates. I'll just have to experiment to see which service is in more demand.

Get involved with a business networking group through the Chamber. Consider joining a local chapter of Rotary. Personally I would not look for an elecrician in Thrifty Nickel but I would in my neighborhood paper. Sponsor school newsletters in an area of town you work in. And of course Craigs list. Are you bonded? That would be a value add.

Every community has a circle of connections. If your business is remodeling for example, you should make contact with a local plumber, electrician, painter, etc., but think a little outside the box as well. For example, get to know local insurance agents, realtors and the like. You're not going to be able to compete with the big guys when it comes to traditional advertising...so don't try.
