Lost and Found
Went missing in 2003
War Stories / Not rated but would be PG 13 for sex and violence
First off this is not to be confused with the Fox News Network documentary series hosted by Ex Marine and paid commentator Ollie North. Same name different story. This one, not seen since 2003, was a 88 minute pilot film for a series that never went any further than this pilot film.
Jeff Goldblum found himself in between movies where large dinosaurs were chasing him around the landscape and hoped to be in a high paid weekly TV series. Prior to this pilot Jeff had done a voice dub for a film titled Robbie the Reindeer in The Legend of the Lost Tribe. A serious TV series probably sounded good to him. The pilot he chose was War Stories. After the Reindeer film JG went on to a bunch of TV and movie projects. Last year he had a key role in the Oscar nominated film The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Good choice. Then he went on to the Johnny Depp flop Mordecai. Bad choice. Jeff is waiting for a start date for the upcoming Independence Day 2. Hopefully another good choice.
Lake Bell plays the female lead and probably had high hopes as War Stories took shape. JG and LB play journalists who have ended up in Uzbekistan where Muslim terrorism was raging due to the arrival of many former Afghanistan Taliban residents who ended up here while escaping from Afghanistan. For the most part the movie only had three actual scenarios. The main characters hung around the nice hotel where they resided. They drank hard and all tried to act like Ernest Hemingway. Then they bedded down together. Next they would drive around to battle areas trying to get the award winning photo and/or story about what was going on.
Sometimes they do well. Other times they get shot full of holes. They try to avoid the holes because it immediately stopped the good times back at the hotel. The outside scenes all look the same. Usually they stop the 4 wheel vehicle and jump out to find they are surrounded by crazed terrorists. Sometimes they are shot. They are always yelled at and threatened. A few of them do rap songs and dance. Go figure.
The one supreme bad guy wears while robes lives in a cave and acts like bin Laden using a different name. Eventually he gets his hands on JG and his new lady partner who mainly takes pix. The best scene in the movie takes place when JG interviews the bin Laden character and points out all the problems with his fanatic beliefs and actual life style. This means that although you will have to sit near 90 minutes the payoff is only about 5 minutes long. There are also a few neat surprises at the end. If you want to know what they are you can find this film on DVD for under $4.
Should this pilot have made it to weekly TV. I think they made the right decision. It didn’t.
Rated 2.1 out of 4.0 reason Nielsen ratings say NO.
