Yup. The very same scenario plays out in Babylon Five (the TV series). I want to say season three. The President has been effectively assassinated and the VP takes over and is actually working for a Shadow government (the primary antagonists for the first several seasons are called the Shadow). He institutes Brown Shirts on the space station reminiscent of Hitler's Youth or Mao's communists or Stalin's KGB. They are paid for informing on everyone in the space station to a pseudo-leader. When people are always in distrust of each other, it effectively eliminates and movement to oppose or question those in authority.
I recently saw Jupiter Ascending (which got terrible reviews but was a good movie) and it made me realize how great B5 would be if it were re-made with our current effects tech. I would like to see B5 as a mini-series that recapitulated the main arc, but was able to include some of the threads that JS had to cut (from season 4) because of threat of cancellation.
Jan (B5 season 5 was not worth watching...occasional good scenes, but no Muse.)
Season Five focused on the resolution of the individual players' destinies following completion of first the Shadow War and then the Telepath War. If you're not into that, it's pretty tough to stay with, I agree.
I've been curious about Babylon Five, but never took time to watch.. Guess I will have to at some point. Course my favorite is Firefly that I just finished watching through again.. Another series with the premise being people who want to be left alone, versus a powerful central government..
I loved Firefly and wished they could have gone another season. The movie was a disaster - too many loose ends to try to wrap up in two hours, but I did like the premise.
Want to be left alone by the government and others? Get to be 80. They're scared to hell of you. Why? Because you've got nothing to lose. At my age, I can be cranky to everyone including government gofers. What can they do to me? "FED SUES 80 Yr. OLD RETIREE." They pretty much limit themselves to phone calls and I have caller I.D. so I never answer. Works good on donor solicitations too, although I don't know why. Just for fun, I might answer and pretend to be silly senile.
worst thing for solicitations is to be put on permanent hold (therefore wasting their time). Just ask if they could hold for a min, and then put the phone on mute and set it down. eventually they will hang up after wasting time on you and getting nothing back.
Plus the fact I dont have to be upset by having my home invaded by these calls. Its like getting passive revenge at no cost !! Plus, if everyone did this, the calls would STOP for lack of financial return on them.

As a dad, I was a nerd, but unlike me, my son sounds a lot like your dad. I don't know where he got it from, but him and my grandson did amazing things like building a playground for the city out of wood and steel for his Eagle Scout rank. Oh well, at least I raised him to be a good man.
hey, nerds are the glue holding the nation together, sir! . . dad was a financial nerd, having grown up during the depression;;; he logged everything in a ledger from a $20 fan to blow cool air down the hall along the axis of the house, to a $32,000 check for a 320 acre tree farm from which lots of houses and dining room tables have been built. . he bought the Briggs go-cart engine for $7.50 and made a functional Model T out of two broken ones which cost $25 together, when he was a kid carrying newspapers. . frugal. . yes, I'm prejudiced. -- j

I just bought $30,000.00 worth of cows they might come after me for the money and the methane gas the cows produce that I might build a bomb with. Yup I could be a terrorist. Eat more beef!
You are very much welcome. We need more appreciate people in this world for the ones that supply the true needs of the people. Even though I produce a hormone and antibiotic free animal I still receive flack from PETA and other organizations. So when I say thank you it is from my heart.

It kind of makes me want to move $5001 from one bank to another that I bank at. Suppose we all did that, would it trigger some action against us? I think we should just do it. I'm might just do it to see what happens, in cash. Anyone willing to join the test?
Bank calls the cops. The cops come and confiscate your cash. The cops also advise that you under investigation. You remain under investigation as the years pass and pass without you seeing a cent of that cash until you die. To think America would come to this.
Five grand isn't what it used to be... sure sounds like a clear violation of the forth amendment. One day we will find the government has used the Constitution to line a bird cage in the White House.
The purpose is to remove cash from circulation - make it all digital. That way, should we have another crash the gov't can seize your accounts to use as payments on the debt, or to prop someone up. I've been withdrawing cash for awhile because of this. Other than to pay bills, there is no reason to have excess cash in a bank. It earns no interests and you can't get at all of it if you wanted, and as you can see, they can restrict how much you can have at any given time. Another reason for Bitcoin. I have bitcoins, and a bitReserve account that I can use to move bitcoins into other currencies, gold, or silver. BitReserve removes some of the fluctuation of bitcoin out of the equation. I don't know if bitcoin can go the distance, but I'm going to do my best to support it. Cash out, and look at other currencies, now before they tighten up the restrictions.
Sometimes you have to stop worrying about such things. I've gotten to the point that I'm so whizzed off at what's going on I've stopped being concerned, and silent about it.
Yeah, either that or in property, assets, etc. I figure just as good to use the money to have more food, water supplies, etc on hand.. and have it invested in a few small things here and there. Definitely better than just sitting in the bank.. I will have to look into BitReserve, hadn't heard of that. Sounds like more of a savings / investment as opposed to the speculation that just acquiring bitcoins can be...
I was skeptical of bitreserve. I've been playing with it and being able to move bitcoins to/from other stable currencies seems valuable. Te supposedly keep physical assets to back your purchase
pride in america dance; is a joke. with all these financial regs being imposed upon us why would anyone want to take pride in what america has become. i fully expect that within 20 years there will be a revolt in america when you consider the way things are proceeding now. glad i am not 20 years old.
This matter is much bigger than just "reporting large cash transactions". Not that the Constitution counts anymore, but all such intrusions of privacy are prohibited by the 4th Amendment.
I have not troubled to verify, but it's been reported that FedGov plans may include that it can withdraw/steal whatever it wants from bank accounts, without notice or even indictment and trial. Such has been done of late in at least a couple of other "nations". Seems it's always in a desperate attempt by Gov to cover it's debt. Theirs, not ours! We are Ruled, you know.
Simon Black, mentioned in the article, writes a pretty good e-newsletter (free), though he tends to be a bit alarmist, he does give a lot of good material. He is a Libertarian, lives in Chile and travels constantly.
What a supprise! (The only part that's really surprising is that 1984 and big brother became a reality shortly after 9/11/2001. The prediction was 17 years early. Better late than mart?)
Hell, getting an outboard motor repaired can cost more than that. The only think left to think is that it's still one more power grab to control the populace.
Think its more likely a middle range of assets. No danger if you are broke or well connected to power brokers (unless you make speeches like Goldwater, or act against the banksters.)

You serve the state not only by informing on your neighbor but even your own mama too.
It also occurs to me that at 80, life in prison might not be much of a deterrent.
