I read that these were clashes between two Islamic groups. I'm confused, as my Government claims that religion, particularly Islam, has nought to do with these conflicts.

Can someone enlighten me here?

I'm having trouble keeping these groups straight. We can't possible align with any of them. Glad we stayed out of Syria.
