    I think the crux of this story has to do with changes in legal determinations of parent. Old British law had an emphasis on marriage in determining parental rights. Bastards had a legal definition under the law. In US law, we have seen decisions that favor emotional appeal rather than enforcement of contractual rights. This blatant activism on the part of judges has lead countries to create convoluted agencies such as the "fertility regulator." But I have a question. Absent any contractual agreement (written not oral) including marriage, how would you determine parental rights/obligations?
