The Robot Car of Tomorrow May Just Be Programmed to Hit You

Most troubling is that your car may 'decide' to sacrifice (i.e., kill) you to avoid hitting a small car holding 4 teens because your life is less important than the 4 teens lives.
A bright young objectivist named Stuart Hayashi posted an essay on "The Argument from Metaphysical Impossibility". This could be a subset of that, as it assumes that a crash is the only choice. Seeing an imminent collision, would the car not just stop??
As I recall, we did this problem in physics. To avoid a collision, should you swerve, stop, or both? It turns out that you cannot do both more efficiently than just one or the other. Also, depending on the parameters of course, as I recall, stopping is more effective that trying to swerve.
We also have had these ethical challenges tossed out before: the runaway train and the fat person and all that… Interesting mind games, perhaps, but not real life.

The robot might also do the same if programmed to lower total insurance claims concluding that a one car crash with damage only to your car and a tree, and paying out your life insurance (if any) instead of medical bills for a car full of teens (that might continue for years.) The actuaries control the "outcome" and your policy terms would include a stipulation that you are willing to sacrifice your right to life in such a case.
