Economic Development - Is government the solution or the problem.

I sat through an economic development meeting tonight and got me on this subject. I believe governments sole purpose is control and restriction. Therefore believe if those 2 items plus taxes were kept to a bare minimum there would be no need for a committee to find out how to improve local economic development.

The law of unintended consequences bites us in the ass every time, and waste is a given. I would like to give an example. This fall a group of us in our local community decided we wanted to have a community dance and barbecue competition that included a beer garden. We each put in our private funds and utilized the individual talents of our members to pull off a highly successful event that the public loved. We had young kids learning to dance with their parents stepping out and showing their friends how to dance. We had families hanging out by the firepit sharing stories and laughing all the while ignoring the coldest fall weather Texas has experienced in generations. In the end we cleared over $2000 to fund future events. Put this in contrast to a wine event that is sponsored by the city to the tune of $15,000 and they still can not turn a profit. "Get out of the way government!" "We got this."Mark as read | Best of... | Permalink|
- 1Posted by edweaver 10 years agoTo me that is the only way for success. There is skin in the game when the government is not involved and if it makes enough money it may continue to exist if people are willing to put in the work. If not it goes away as it should. In government they increase spending on failures. :)Mark as read | Parent | Best of... | Permalink|
