One local butcher was inspected and agreed to pay for a Halal certificate for his beef and lamb. A month later he was told- you cannot have pork anywhere in your shop.
This was too much so the butcher canceled.

There are a number of Halal certificate providers. Their level of integrity, religious or otherwise, varies. A few have links to so-called charities that are fronts for well known terror groups. Others are criminal gangs who see a racket and want to be in it.

One problem for the consumer is that the existence of a Halal certificate may not be made public, the company concerned does not publish that information, the benefit if any is from the certificate provider claiming to inform the target market.

I'd like to see more consumer groups asking for a non-halal statement from companies suspecting of giving in.
