Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck." - Robert A. Heinlein

Perhaps my favorite Heinlein novel was "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel". It's the story of a teenage boy and little girl who get kidnapped by illegal space aliens and save the Earth from rotation.

In one scene, the boy, Kip, is busy growing his body back, when the little girl, Peewee, a genius, makes a verbal gaffe. Kip is about to rub her nose in it when he remembers the words of his father:
"Some people insist that “mediocre” is better than “best.” They delight in clipping wings because they themselves can’t fly. They despise brains because they have none. Pfah! "

"There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him." - Robert A. Heinlein

    Anybody else immediately think, "Obamacare"?
