I wonder how I survived my childhood. I used swings and other playground equipment. I rode bicycles, horses and cows. I body surfed and board surfed in the Pacific without supervision. I played outside from breakfast until dark without my mom sitting there watching.

You're lucky to be alive, RMP! Swings are a clear and present danger and should have been banned long ago, along with slides, sleds, swimming pools, scooters, skateboards, tricycles, bicycles, slingshots, BB guns, rubber bands, pencils, pens, dolls, football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, hockey, ice skating, roller skating, roller blading, track and field, gymnastics, walking, running, crawling, picking one's nose, picking scabs, squeezing zits, lighting farts on fire, smoking cigarettes, holding hands, and candy. All have been shown to pose some sort of danger or risk, and therefore must be forbidden by the ever watchful guardian state. After all, it's for the children.

...and how about a good ol' unsafe and insane Fourth of July! I can still get M80s and roman candles in Tia Juana, but I have to go down the Baja to Estero Beach to set them off.

I hear they don't do dodge ball or snowball fights anymore either.

When I was six, I walked almost a mile to school with a friend and her older brother, who was nine. I live in the same area now, but it would be unusual for my six year-old to make the walk to school. I'm amazed at how much has change. The crime rate is way down compared to then. Why are we so scared now compared to then?

24/7 news cycle and attendant sensationalism to drive up viewers/readers/subscribers

      Plus

Decades of "Authority Figures" such as politicians, police, teachers, doctors, lawyers, etc explaining to people over and over that you cannot take care of yourself, you need outside help in the persons of the above listed groups and a witches cauldron of alphabet soup agencies.
