You get what you pay for...

To give you all a little background before I delve into the issue...

I attended a university in Florida right out of high school and was double majoring in Nursing and English Literature (there's a not-so-complicated explanation for the strange choice in majors). I stopped two years in to go to EMT and Fire School because that was what I truly wanted to do. At the same time I joined a volunteer fire department. I am now a fire inspector and going to school for arson investigation. With that being said, I changed my major to Science.

The Issue: The Arson Investigation program that I am in is offered at a local College. The same college that I attended for my EMT certification. I made an 'advising' appointment to see which of my credits will apply to my new major...and to obtain an projected graduation date. I do work full time so I told my employer that I would be a half hour late, as I scheduled the absolute earliest appointment that I could.
I arrived at my 8:30 appointment this morning to a less-than-friendly receptionist, and delayed sign in. None the less, I signed in and waited to be called. 8:50 rolls around and 5 people that came after me, were already seen and dismissed. At this point I'm irritated but I kept my composure because it IS Monday morning and I decided I would be patient. Ten more minutes go by and the receptionist turns around and asks "What was your name again?"

I very calmly got up, and told her that if I decide to stay at this school, I will reschedule my appointment. She replied "You don't need to be so rude, she'll be with you in a moment."
I said nothing, and walked out.

Needless to say, I will not be going back to this college. I was accepted back to the University, so I will return next Spring. I never had a very good experience with the college, I always had to do most of the footwork myself, I found that the 'hired help' is useless there. It was ultimately more affordable for me, I'm still young and don't have loads of extra money.

I got what I paid for. After today, I am looking forward to competent employees at the University...and maybe even a little help whenever I have questions.

Good for you! What you describe is exactly why I didn't finish my Master's degree: the obvious and acted-on belief that anyone and everything is more important that a student's time. When I found my self shuttling the same piece of paper across campus for the 4th time in as many days, I said "I know walking is good for me, but how is doing this particular walking advancing my education?" When I couldn't think of any reasons, I told my department and my advisor why I was quitting. My advisor congratulated me and said he would be leaving the department shortly. Unfortunately, it's not the type of degree that I can transfer to somewhere else.
Again, well done - don't let them push [original typo putsch!] you around just because they can.

That's good you're buying what you want.

*If* you can find someone with a brain at the college, you may be able to negotiate to get more of your credits to apply. You just have to find someone who cares.

The rude woman may have been a rare exception. Or it could be they're lower end and expect clients to put up with that.

You'll probably negotiate the best deal possible.
