"Modern Economy Rests On Single Road" In North Carolina Where Hurricane Collapsed Bridges ?

Excerpt:
"a Wharton professor who studies artificial intelligence and start-ups claimed on X, "The modern economy rests on a single road in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. The road runs to the two mines that are the sole supplier of the quartz required to make the crucibles needed to refine silicon wafers."

Ethan Mollick noted at the time, "There are no alternative sources known" if supply disruptions were seen in Spruce Pines.

Fast-forward to this past weekend across the Western North Carolina area, where a major disaster continues to unfold after tropical system Helene dumped torrential rains and unleashed devastating floods that pulverized entire towns, destroyed roads, highways, and bridges, and left tens of thousands without power. They could make crucibles out of aluminum oxide, instead of quartz.

Spruce Pine is a gorgeous little place high in the mountains. I didn't see much in the way of quartz in the times I visited, but the ground was littered with flakes of mica. Gaylord Perry had his farm next to my ex's place. I really want to go back again just to wander around town and taste that delicious fried chicken again. Don't remember hearing about quartz mines, although there used to be emeralds. I have a few in host rock. Still no quartz mines in my memory...

I am so freaking sick and tired of every single news event becoming a Chicken Little moment. No, people, the sky isn't falling. The number of cases of some really rare disease doubles from 1 to 2, and the media states "Number of cases of XYZ disease double from last year".

    JUST STOP ALREADY!

It's so nice to hear from someone who recognizes how such stats can induce unnecessary panic.
      Such common sense isn't common.

You can do anything you want with statistics. This is how I heard it when I was a wee little tyke (feels like a hundred years ago). The U.S. and Russia were in some kind of contest, and the US won. But the Russian headline read "Russia finishes second, US finishes next to last."

    not buying it
in WW2 bridges to cross rivers were made in days, hours

and cannot the current number of "crucibles" work for now? why are new ones needed so quickly?
cannot the old ones be recycled?

Untangling from the current interconnected society is very important. We are way to dependent on the current society, and need to cut the cords s much as possible. Independent energy supply, water supply, food supply, etc. It was nice while it lasted, but the "grid" is not very stable.
