Here’s the funny thing: About 65 percent of the country’s budget already comes from foreign aid and the U.S. has spent more than $100 billion in the country.

    "Spreading democracy" was the worst possible policy for us in the middle east. There's no cultural "hooks" to use to make the targeted audience relate to the concepts of democracy.

    If we were going to nation-build at all, we should have focused on building *republics*. A republic has a foundation in law, and that would have been a good way to usurp and replace the Koran and sharia as foundational law.
