Okay, at first, this is a headline because Lori Lightfoot is a progressive troglodyte masquerading as mayor of Chicago - one of the most dangerous cities in the United States because of its rampant crime and decades of being run by Democrats. But there's a catch about this story: it's a big nothingburger.

You see, I work with first responders in emergency communications. And nearly all police, fire, and ambulance radio traffic has gone to encrypted, narrow-band transmissions! This isn't about suppression of information either - the complaint that lots of people are being "deprived" is massive hyperbole. This information is privileged: its just that it wasn't technologically feasible to protect these communications until recent developments (and the costs came down). Putting in this kind of technology for an entire county or State is expensive.

The other part that most people don't know is that these encrypted radios take up less radio bandwidth than the prior ones - only half as much - and the digital encryption allows for better digital signal recovery, ie clearer transmissions and better communications.
