Hiding is not living, it is not the answer. I will die violently if I have to for me and mine before I hideaway. A faraday cage is great except that anything an electronic device may connect to may not be there and what you have (power/vehicle) will make you a shiny target for looters.

What I've read and seen on TV about the Yellowstone caldera volcano indicates that a super eruption would destroy South Dakota and the widespread destruction not indicated by the map from the ash cloud would make all the gagging to death at Pompeii look like an anthill in comparison. That widespread ash cloud would even reach where I live in Alabama. Fortunately for us, odds are many more centuries should pass before it ever devastate most of North America once again.
Yeah, I can just see Birmingham being a nuke target that's just a quick drive from my home and everything going to hell as a high crime anarchy zone.

As for being ready for an Electromagnetic Pulse, we actually are in good shape. Even another Carrington Event wouldn't have all that much effect on us, because almost all long range communication is done over fiber now and the power grid is really tough and breakers would short any large imposed pulse to ground.

People are people, whether they're in a large metropolitan area or in a small community hiding.

I'm not impressed with their map of the States, showing the 'submersion zone' including the Rockies and the High Plains (are we really going to see the seas rise more than a mile???). Plus, it ignores what happens when Yellowstone blows (theoretically the western third of the States will be uninhabitable).

Running away is not the answer.

I've heard of communities like this and what I found was anything but Gulch. If we did our own, it would be better, but putting a target on our backs doesn't sound appealing. The only way I can think of to use this idea would be to build a small town on top of the bunkers, with entrances disguised by individual houses and landscaping. Gulching in the open, if you will. Current communities are headed for the one-boss Cuffy Meigs model. They have only one uniting point, f--- the feds. That will not keep their communities stable without a central power, they will become the thing they hate.

Thanks for posting this. I find it very interesting and somewhat appealing. I think that, if there were a natural disaster, it would be a brilliant place to wait it out and then work from after; however, I don't think I'd want to hide out there in case of war or something humans may have a chance to fight and win. I guess I'm stubborn but I'd rather stand for something than fall for anything.

Before I retired, I was a civilian engineering contractor for the Air Force for 35 years, I can speak to the EMP aspect. your government has some Rad-Hard electronics, by no means everything. A lot, if not most, of what they use is COTS, commercial off the shelf. Plugged in or not, if it is not heavily shielded, it will burn. Faster and more modern devices (smaller IC feature size) are most at risk. The Russians take a total different tact, they use vacuum tubes for critical comms. We also employ micro-sized vacuum tubes for critical comms. (As small as transistors). Aside from saving your precious electronics, it won't matter if the rest of the world has reset to 1822. Back then, people were equipped to live off-grid. Today hundreds of millions will riot, then starve. I am old. I'm unsure as to how much effort I am willing to exert to eek out the last few years. That part of the country gets cold. Real cold. My old bones don't relish that idea.

I live in Sedona Az, my house is anchored to an iron oxide impregnated bedrock shelf which a portion of which had to be blasted out to accommodate the foundation of the house. plus the ground surface around the house is surrounded by iron oxide rocks. So, I'm confident that there is adequate protection against an EMP from a CME.

There's a market for this, I think. I understand the super-wealthy have been at it for a while with much more lavish digs. Several years ago I was approached to help engineer a remote cattle ranch in New Zealand and I understand that was for Ted Turner. I was talking with them about wind and solar power.
