Tesla Moves HQ

I'm beginning to like Elon a little more than I did when all Tesla did was make overpriced cars and lose money. They are figuring out how to manufacture and manage a supply chain, and are largely off the federal dole (subsidies). He is also completely correct and outspoken about wasteful hydrogen, although it may be for parochial reasons.

Giving CA the bird and moving to TX are another excellent step.

I know that many Gulchers don't like Elon Musk taking government contracts in order to get started. In his business, the startup cost is so prohibitively high that I just don't see how you could do it any other way. He has now largely weaned his company off of the government subsidies and definitely is trending in the right direction. One aspect that Ayn Rand didn't go into detail on was the transition from an invention into mass production. This is where many would-be companies die. A very real challenge I am dealing with is how to bring in enough dollars through near term sales to generate enough money to capitalize the big long term moneymakers.

It is surprising how few people understand what it really takes to make a product and make a little money. The risk is far higher than understood, and all they see are the successful, who they are immediately jealous of. They don't see all the work and failures.

Very true. Even the successful inventor/entrepreneurs usually forbear getting paid for quite a few years. All of this points to an Ayn Rand truism. The inventor was the last profession to appear, and it will be the first to disappear.

My big gripe are the pharmaceuticals who get grants to develop a product, then sell lots of their stock and still sell the product we paid for at an alarming price. Other countries aren't charging the prices we pay for pharmaceuticals. Particularly life saving drugs shouldn't be so expensive.

      I agree.

The whole medical industry in the US has become a protected parasitic monopoly. People need to be in the middle of ALL payments to force a free market back. NO insurance payments directly to medical professionals.

I still think the solution to pharmaceutical costs are to set a rule that the price in the US can be no more than 20% higher than the price a drug is sold for anywhere else. European countries have policies like this, and they don't overpay. If they want to offer a drug cheaply to help a disadvantaged country, either give it away, or have someone else subsidize it. We stop subsidizing the worldwide drug industry.
