DeSantis not what he appears - Now an Anti-1st Amendment LAW

HB233, which DeSantis signed into law, REQUIRES all students and faculty attending STATE campuses to register their political views/affiliations with the State..think about that.

Further, DeSantis is protecting free speech on state campuses, all speech, through HB 233, as if the 1st Amendment didn't exist, unless, of course, you record a lecture and post it without the consent of the lecturer. If you do that you are fined up to $200K.

So you can speak and hear a wide range of ideas and viewpoints but if you try to convey what you hear to anyone else using the recordings (which you permitting to take with HB 233, for personal use), you can be fined up to $200K. How is that free speech? How is that free press? How is any of this remotely 1st Amendment?

If this is representative of the 'good guys' we are well and truly screwed.

Read for yourself (12 pages: notable: lines 10, 16, 20, 51. and 68).

To condemn the words of that new Florida law is easy without noting the context.

    Quotes from:
    https://joannenova.com.au/2021/06/flo...
    - see link to Tampa Times etc.

Florida: schools to teach downside of communism: universities to teach goodside of unfashionable ideas

Science of Civilization Lesson #2: What’s the most deadly kind of government on Earth?
    “Big Government”

Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida, wants students in his state to understand why Cubans swim to Florida more than Floridians swim to Cuba.
Instead of marking universities on their diversity of skin color, DeSantis wants to mark them on their diversity of ideas. Florida will require universities survey staff and students on beliefs.

    In a comment:
Democratic political machine are out there trying to get dirt on this bloke, DeSantis. They’re trolling through all his social media contributions, interviewing old girlfriends and college mates. Trying to find some embittered distant cousin or perhaps a slave trader going back generations.

    The context:
DeSantis wants financial sanction on universities that have and create lack of diversity - where diversity is measured by the range of political opinion.

      University diversity test coming:
How radical. Instead of marking universities on their diversity of skin color, DeSantis wants to mark them on their diversity of ideas. Florida will require universities survey staff and students on beliefs.

The survey will examine “the extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented” in the state universities and colleges — and seeks to find whether students, faculty and staff “feel free to express beliefs and viewpoints on campus and in the classroom,” according to the bill, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

Think of it as a scorecard for the university, with the promise of financial support for universities that pass:

But DeSantis and bill sponsor Sen. Ray Rodrigues suggested that budget cuts could be imminent if universities and colleges are found to be “indoctrinating” students.

“That’s not worth tax dollars and that’s not something that we’re going to be supporting moving forward,” DeSantis [said].

Imagine a situation where a university has an incentive to teach both sides? Spread this idea around….

Western Civilization is not dead yet.

I do not think free speech applies to unrestricted broadcasting of college lectures. That material is private property. It is given to those attending for a limited range of reasons. These do not include regarding the lecture as their own and sprinkling about. The knowledge yes, the entire lecture, no.

    De Santis.
If you could score politicians on a scale with 100 being real proper Objectivist what would they score? - Most Dems from 25 and down (if not a negative score), most repubs in the range 40 down to 10. De Santis would score about 60, pretty good. If you think anything like the current system could produce a majority of politicians above 50, then, well, your best choice is a private Gulch.

    This site.
Yes becoming less Objectivist. To the hard core remaining- a touch more self-analysis / retrospection would help. Plenty of life remains, good material, good views and thinking.

AJA would score 70 to 60 on my scale. If AJA left this site it would be a loss to Objectivism.

Agreed. Still, that is a stipulation of campus policy as an agreement with a student prior to attending, no? It's a policy violation subject to expulsion or loss of student aid not a law subject to nearly a quarter million dollar fine.
Besides, these are public (state) campuss with public (State) employees. It's not like a commercial entity which makes money on its lectures on top of paid attendance. Again, still a contractual matter and a not a state issue subject to fines, IMO.

Objective (ADJ) - expressing or dealing with facts or conditions as perceived without distortion by personal feelings, prejudices, or interpretations

A great number of people I considered friends stopped coming to this site after telling me it was becoming less and less objective, less objectivist. While it is disheartening there is no denying that there are ZERO people working in our best interests, particularly those foist upon us by popular opinion via propaganda outlets (there is no news anymore), only some who make slipping on the noose less noticeable with less friction.

To ignore such a thing as this is not objective, it's partisan. If biden, shumer, whitemer, or cuomo sign this same unconstitutional tripe into law folks here and everywhere right-leaning or 'conservative' would be going ballistic. But its sun-shine boy DeSantis so turn a blind eye, make excuses and if you need to, shoot the messenger.

Free speech includes all speech, even stuff you cant stand or a re disgusted by. Thwarting leftist indoctrination by curtailing free speech and free press is giving in to the left by destroying the document they've focused at all along. Is DeSantis or his lawyer not aware of this??

I'll take a page from my old Gulch friends. I think it's time to move on, make my world even smaller, frequent this place less and less.

Hopefully this site will carry forward more true to its purpose.

I you are not getting a value of course you should not expend yours. I have enjoyed exchanging ideas and truths with you. IMO people have differences and it is rare to find like minded folks.
The person who means the most to me is my BW.
We certainly don’t always see eye to eye.
