If you 'ignore' a username you will not see its posts, but others will still see them. But I think you have to be logged in for the display to be blocked for you.
What did you try that didn't work? The 'ignore' button under a member's post immediately causes that post to not display, and causes all of his other replies to not display after the pages are reloaded.
It does not affect an initial post introducing a topic in a thread -- only replies -- and only works when you are logged in (otherwise it doesn't know you are looking).
You can of course always read or not read any post or thread you choose. But you can't prevent others from seeing what you post on a public forum, and you can't suppress someone else's posts from being seen by others.
Of course I can’t nor would I expect it to. On Facebook (and I understand this is not Facebook but it was the only example I had to go by) a “block” is analogous to an “ignore.” However when a person is blocked, neither party can see the other’s post. But other people can. It appears to be one-way only on this forum. No problem. Now I know it. I just didn’t know it then. Edit due to accidentally hitting the Save button too soon.

Isn't that for your own account page in contrast to an open public discussion forum?
No idea. As I stated, I didn’t understand it then and now it is unimportant. I do recall looking at the FAQs and not finding anything more than marginally helpful. I was fairly new to this forum at the time, and struggling to find a place. I believe I have found it now and don’t need to ignore anyone. The finer details of how it works are no longer of concern to me.
It was a long time ago. What I tried was unimportant but the only thing TO try was to click the Ignore button, so I believe that was what I did. But then when I made a comment, it was replied to by that person who was supposed to be “Ignored.” And I was notified that the person replied to me.
As I stated before, it doesn’t matter. My personal ignore skills have been sharpened and I learned that what people say here or on any online forum are far less important than they (or I) seem to think.
"But then when I made a comment, it was replied to by that person who was supposed to be 'Ignored'.
It was never intended by this system for anyone to tell others what to ignore because he doesn't want it seen.
"what people say here or on any online forum are far less important than they (or I) seem to think".
What is important is always what is important to whom and for what. A value of this forum is that anyone can follow the public discussions, and read and assess the content for himself.
You could set up a filter in your email program but it probably isn't worth it. For that purpose it's easier to simply not participate in what you don't want to, which you do, and others will read and judge whatever specific responses that they want to.
When I clicked the ignore button, that person’s post did disappear from my sight. I am not sure whether ALL of that person’s posts disappeared for me or not. I figured quickly it wasn’t worth bothering with so I un-Ignored and never looked back.
They would have all disappeared (for you) but only for pages loaded or reloaded after you invoked 'ignore'. The exception is the introductory post at the top of a thread, which is unaffected by 'ignore'.
How do I NEVER see a post or reply generated by an unpleasant poster?
Thank you.

Each of us gets to decide the value of any forum.
