“Mental blackmail feels like a violation of the “true” self. But the question whether there is a “true self” is itself contentious—from religion to philosophy to psychology, there have been many a pronouncement on it. It goes to the heart of what a human being is—are we so deeply rooted in our psyche, that to disobey “it” (whether for money, or for conformance) is tantamount to selling our soul? What are the mental and physical consequences of staying true (or not) to our true self, if there is one?”

To be consciously introspective has it's down side: Your conscience, inner voice of self, will never let you be when you've done wrong. For those with a strong conscience but a weak connection to the minds control over the temptations of the brain, one treads the edge of committing suicide.
One must reconcile with one's own conscience in order to live without that internal conflict.

If not, hence the ole saying: you sold your soul to the devil himself...or the country store as the old song goes.

Consequence? Social isolation, and that’s a good thing.

A hint of our predicament is the Zoomer’s understanding of ‘friend’ - a mere click away.

This Boomer might count a dozen friends in seventy years.
