350 children under the age of five drown in pools each year nationwide. The majority of the deaths occur in June, July and August; most in backyard pools. Among unintentional injuries, drowning is the second leading cause of death to this age group after motor vehicle accidents.

I am betting that is more than the total number of young children who die of Covid this year.

We have an Ordinance in our town. Pools must have their own fencing. My pool is in my back yard and my property is completely fenced (6 foot cedar) and I have an inner six foot fence that hides the pool.

That's pretty much standard for most places and yet the drownings still occur. But I don't want to ban home swimming pools anymore than I want to stop having regular school. Life is not without risks and we can't let fear of a lesser risk overcome common sense.

From two days ago: For children (0-17 years), cumulative COVID-19 hospitalization rates are much lower than cumulative influenza hospitalization rates at comparable time points* during recent influenza seasons.
