Truth, Freedom, and Ferguson

One large truth will go unmentioned, even if it is, improbably, grasped. American liberty has been suffering slow constriction by the government for decades, but for the poor—of all ethnicities—that constriction is already a deadly chokehold; power tyrannizes the powerless first. They are stuck in failing public schools, knocking out the bottom rung on the ladder of upward mobility. Minimum wage laws price them out of that all important first job—the second rung—and a tangle of licensing laws and restrictive regulations stifle entrepreneurial efforts. Welfare state dependency is the antithesis of freedom and promotes social pathology. Police departments are either indifferent to or overwhelmed by neighborhoods overrun with drugs, prostitution, and violent crime. The racial grievance complex is right that there is a seething rage out there, but it encompasses far more than just issues of black and white. When government deprives its people of liberty while abdicating its proper functions, the seeds of discord and violence are sown. In a variety of contexts, expect more Fergusons.
