There has been an increase on this forum of attacking the individual instead of the topic. I don’t see that tactic being a good long-term solution. That is the only reason I would use my “right” to down vote.

Offending people has become one of the favorite tactics of leftists. Ironically they rather brutally demand not to be offended.

Offending people seems to not ever be practiced by the non radical right side, they seem to stick to some data and facts. That makes the left need to use emotions, tags, labels and stereotypes as their only defense. The Objective system is supposed to require no attacks on any one, personal responsibility and establish your premises using facts and data then proposing your statement. If that is done, there is no need for any attacks, as debate would examine the validity.

It's especially difficult trying to learn and being insulted or demeaned rather than educated. This place is not about being adversarial, but learning from each other.
Forgive how naive or idealistic I sound here, but this is the only place I have to express my thoughts. The real world certainly hasn't been accommodating for someone like me.

Roland, you are exactly correct, it should be a place of discussion and debate, and done in the spirit of honest discourse and examination of your premises. Your data may be suspect, or from a suspect source, or not current, or may be spot on new learnings of value to others. The point is it should never have to "pass muster" with the few individuals who have appointed themselves the arbiter of all things and have a total inability to have a polite discussion without condemning the individual as a "non objectivist", "non scientific" dunderhead. Those are the people who have made it difficult in the Gulch to have a discussion.

Yes, That is why I came here and found that the majority are open minded.

Often while sharing important new information that happens to buck to ole theories of the past, we are often attacked as non objective charlatans...seems to me, to categorically dismiss new info, new ideas and new theories base on observational evidence is NOT being objective.
If that were anti Rand, anti Objective then John Gault would have never entertained the idea of a free energy device.

When confronted with that kind of anti objective diatribe it is not worth the effort to reply; it ruins the spirit of the post for the author and those open minded that would like to engage.
There is so much more to learn out there beyond the status quo and politically accepted that would change the way we think about all the garbage we were taught or told was true settled science, history or any other field of study.

The Earth is the center of the universe. A little blood letting should cure that headache. Slap a few leeches on that open sore. Earths geology was formed slowly and gradually. Imagined Dark matter solves the flaw in our astronomy puzzle. CO2 is the greatest threat to mankind. We are going to run out of oil by 1990.

Funny, in all the Earth, Climate cycles, and sun cycle articles and videos I've posted had all the facts, scientific evidence one would want to have a discussion are provided but some people can't get beyond the titles nor the bull crap said about the science and scientist by the fearful lamestream.

That is not very objective either...

You sir, are a Conspiracy Theorist. (My imitation troll just barked)....Data and facts matter. Don't forget how no one can explain how we get a million Mammoths buried alive, who still had food in their mouths and gullets undigested, who were quickfrozen so fast no decay occurred internally. I mean, that happens all the time, right?

            It is a gradual process.

In geology, gradualism is a theory developed by James Hutton according to which profound changes to the Earth, such as the Grand Canyon, are due to slow continuous processes and not to catastrophes as proposed by the theory of catastrophism.

Yes, however they never explain the Scablands and the other sites where rapid erosion occurred and has been scientifically proven. Also, it still leaves us with flash frozen Mammoths, yes? This is the true nature of debate, different views, and data all worked into a single idea. And no labels, name calling or abuse because we disagree or have differing view points.

              Troll lesson concluded.

                Unimaginative cowards or Today “Trolls”
The reaction from the geologic community was, in a word, glacial. Since the 1790s, the science of geology had been framed by the principle of "uniformitarianism": the idea that geologic change in the past resulted from the same slow, steady processes at work today. Bretz's flood, with elements that suggested the Biblical story of Noah, seemed like a reversion to a pre-scientific era. It was, said one critic, an "outrageous hypothesis."
Bretz was invited to defend his theory at a meeting sponsored by the Geological Society of Washington D.C., in 1927. Six other geologists presented opposing points of view. Bretz disdainfully referred to the group as the "challenging elders." He was nearly 45 years old at the time, a tenured professor at the University of Chicago, and supremely self-confident. He seemed to relish his self-definition as a lonely avatar of scientific truth. "Understanding the Scablands involves imagination and courageous departure from accepted views," he once wrote, implying that his detractors were unimaginative cowards (Bretz, 1959, p 10).
It took 50+ years for the so called scholars to catch up to his work.

It would be nice if people would use facts and data and show where they get it from when they try to "tell us all how it really is". As I understand it, Objectivism is supposedly a "fact based" philosophy, and your position is based on premises established by data.

    Thor-quixote here.

Can't help it. I didn't realize there were people here so narrow-minded that only the words Ayn wrote, and only in the order she wrote them actually exist, and all other words are drivel. No other ideas or actions can be consistent with "the word of Ayn".

I came here to avoid religious dogma while seeking fiscal and social freedom, but dogma must be like death and taxes.

Ayn had an amazing mind. She very well explains many principals that I adhere to. She also understood The United States of America and the constitution was the best protector of the individual. With that said she had flaws like all individuals. I try to take the best ideas and leave the rest. Thanks for the advice DINO.

Yes, reading her novels I was totally impressed by the depth she demonstrated in understanding the US. The reason may have been her being an immigrant and thereby not influenced by environmental effects when growing up.

Her definition of capitalism still stands the scrutiny of times.

Sometimes engaging them afford the opportunity to explain aspects of Objectivist. Sure the troll is likely not to hear or consider what was said but other onlookers, and those casually browsing, may find the explanation to have value. You never can tell.
Generally I'll talk until someone becomes obstinant, starts swearing or insulting or advances to the big D.

Yeah, I've seen people responding with insults towards others they simply just don't agree with here more over the past year. Really no room for that here.

Trolls tend to self engage dino, so even if you don't engage them they pop up anyway.

Since you're talking to me directly~~
Wrote I would not say any more but that was a week ago. So so what if I'm a liar as long as I'm not bearing false witness against some body?
Trolls popping up anyways is how they generally pop up. You write something and some abusive smarty pants pops up.
There are only two or maybe three trolls in The Gulch whose fat egos I've decided not to feed. And that's (yes, once again) all I need to say about that, I reckon.

Excellent point, and true. However, like in all our social systems, some people seem to be allowed a much greater form of latitude than others. Insults, and derogatory language need to be stopped at all points, not just some, which is why we see the circus in media right now.
