INTERVIEW EXCERPT ( Download the full interview PDF here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1808... )
QUESTION: Did you think that “A Question of Sanction” (the essay that precipitated your departure from the Ayn Rand Institute ) would be so controversial?
ANSWER: No. I wrote that short piece as a response to an attack on me by Peter Schwartz for speaking to the Laissez-Faire Book Club, a small dinner meeting in NYC. I broadened the piece to address attitudes I was seeing among Objectivists, but I thought my colleagues in the movement would agree with what I said about tolerance, open Objectivism, and error and evil. I was stunned when so many disagreed.
QUESTION: Today, what is the relationship like between the Ayn Rand Institute (ARI) and the Atlas Society?
ANSWER: By analogy with the U.S. and Russia, I would say we are no longer in a Cold War with missiles pointed at each other.
ARI is now on board with working with libertarians, so we move in some of the same circles. When we encounter ARI people there is a degree of cordiality; principals on the TAS board and staff (though not I) have had conversations with our opposite numbers. However, ARI and its affiliates still have a Putinesque hostility toward TAS. For example, people associated with us are not invited to ARI campus clubs and discussion lists. Scholars supported by ARI don’t communicate with our scholars. Etc.
